*** Place De La Concorde

In each corner of the square stands a colossal statue representing great towns in the different regions of France. The town of Strasbourgh is a portrait of actress Juliette Drouet, long term muse and mistress of Victor Hugo.

Hotel Crillon- This was once the furniture storage place for the royal family. The building was sacked during the revolution in 1792 and at this time the crown jewels were stolen.

The Square-During the Revolution 1,119 people were beheaded here in two years. The east part of the building is where on Feb 6, 1778 a small group of French and Americans gathered to sign the treaty that marked the success of Franklin’s attempts to enlist the help of  France for achieving independence. (The treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Alliance made France the first nation to recognize America’s independence.)

Obelisk-At the center of the square is 3,000 years old. The carved hieroglyphics make reference to Ramsus II allowing it to be dated. It was brought from the Temple of Luxor in 1836 and the method to raise it is transcribed on the bottom
